Works are on-going as the Ministry of Health and Social Development along with the Recovery Development Agency (RDA) award C.W. General Maintenance a contract to dismantle the old incinerator at Pockwood Pond making way for a new one.

British Virgin Islands’ residents and homeowners are being reminded that the improper drainage of wastewater on to public streets, roadways and ghuts constitutes a violation of the Public Health Act.

Mister Speaker, not unlike the civil societies throughout the world, the current limitations of the Territory’s waste collection and disposal systems pose a serious constraint to the sustainable development of the Virgin Islands. These challenges were exacerbated by the widespread destruction caused by the 2017 hurricanes that ravaged the Territory.
Mr. Speaker, although I have on two occasions reported on the effects of the fire that has made the incinerator at Pockwood Pond inoperable I nevertheless find it necessary to report on interim measures taken while the control panel is being assembled and the electrical works are being conducted.

The public including private garbage haulers are notified that in an effort to control indiscriminate dumping of waste at the incinerator at Pockwood Pond, access to the site will not be allowed beyond 4:00 p.m. daily.

Assistant Manager at the Department of Waste Management, Mr. Neville Allen has said that access to the Pockwood Pond incinerator will be limited to 4:00 p.m. daily in an effort to control the practice of indiscriminate dumping.
Fellow residents of the Virgin Islands, for too long we have been faced with the challenges of improper and inefficient waste management strategies. It is now a subject that must be addressed and solved.
