Greetings fellow Virgin Islanders. As we approach another hurricane season, it is crucial that we remain vigilant and prepared. This year's Atlantic Hurricane Season is already proving to be an active one, as evidenced by the flash floods experienced in early May. These events have served as a wake-up call, alerting us to the areas that require immediate attention to mitigate flooding during inclement weather.

The Government of the Virgin Islands through the Ministry of Communications and Works, is actively preparing for the challenges that lie ahead. The Public Works Department has been deployed to comprehensively prepare and clear ghuts and drains across the Territory. This effort is crucial in mitigating potential flooding and damage from heavy rains during hurricanes. It is important that we properly dispose of waste as in the past, maintenance teams have found mattresses, washing machines, palettes and other debris in the ghuts.

Now is the time for each of us to take proactive steps to ensure our family’s safety and the well-being of our communities. We encourage you to familiarise yourself with your neighborhood, identify persons within your respective communities who may require assistance, and plan alternate routes to and from your home. It is also essential to have emergency contact numbers readily available. 

Residents are encouraged to stay informed and up-to-date on weather systems by downloading apps such as the Disaster Preparedness App, by following the Government's official Facebook page and website, and tuning in to local and regional radio stations.

The government remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting its citizens and infrastructure by proactively preparing for natural disasters and Director of Public Works, Mr. Jeremy Hodge, and I have been assessing drains in Road Town and other areas to identify and address any issues ahead of this hurricane season.

Together, as a community, we can face the challenges of the 2024 Hurricane Season with resilience and determination. Let us work hand-in-hand to ensure that our homes, businesses, and infrastructure are well-protected and that our citizens are safe and secure.
