STATEMENT FROM THE NATIONAL SECURITY COUNCIL ON THE RECENT ARRESTS

The armed robbery at the Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park on 1 July was a shocking incident which caused great concern for all present at the Pier Park that day and for the wider community.

The National Security Council (NSC) wish to assure everyone that safety and security of the Virgin Islands is of the highest priority and welcome the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force’s (RVIPF) announcement that two persons have now been arrested and charged for the robbery. The NSC thanks Acting Commissioner St. Clair Amory and all those Police Officers who have engaged in investigating this matter.  Regular Police patrols of the Pier Park will continue to help give assurance to those visiting and working in the area.

The NSC also congratulates the RVIPF Marine Unit for their successful operation on Friday, 7 July which led to the detention of two vessels in waters near to Anguilla, the arrest of six persons and the seizure of almost two tonnes of suspected cocaine. This was an example of successful collaboration between Overseas Territories, the UK and International Partners and testament to the commitment of the Marine Unit in helping to tackle the illicit trade in narcotics.
