MINISTER FOR COMMUNICATIONS AND WORKS

ON THE FLASHFLOODS, MAY 7TH 2024

The Ministry of Communications and Works is fully aware of the unexpected and severe flooding that has occurred across the Virgin Islands territory today. Heavy rainfall has led to widespread flash flooding in various parts of the islands, causing significant disruptions to traffic and infrastructure, as well as impacting homes and businesses.

As the Minister of Communications and Works, I want to assure the public that our dedicated teams are actively responding to this emergency situation. I sincerely empathise with all the individuals, families, and businesses who have experienced damage or loss as a result of today's extreme weather event. My thoughts, prayers and unwavering support are with you during this challenging and distressing time.

We are closely coordinating our efforts with emergency services, local authorities, and other key government agencies to comprehensively assess the full impact of the flooding and implement all necessary measures to address the aftermath. Restoring critical infrastructure and services is our top priority.

Unfortunately, the weather forecasts indicate that we can expect more heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours. The safety and well-being of our residents and visitors remain our absolute highest concern. I urge everyone to exercise extreme caution, avoid all flooded areas, and closely follow any instructions or advisories issued by the relevant authorities.

Please stay informed about the evolving situation through official government channels and media outlets. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we work swiftly to resume normal operations and restore the affected areas. Your patience and resilience during this time of crisis are greatly appreciated.

We will continue to provide regular updates and ensure that all necessary assistance is provided as the situation progresses. Together, we will overcome this challenge and support our community through this difficult period.
