Press Release
The Road Town Partnership (RTP) said to be a forward-looking public-private initiative launched by Premier and Minister of Finance Dr. Natalio Wheatley, will host its first public consultation next month.
This groundbreaking collaboration launched in April will bring together Government, business leaders, and community stakeholders with a shared commitment to creating a cleaner, greener, more vibrant, and pedestrian-friendly Road Town.
Premier Wheatley while announcing the initiative, underscored the importance of collective action:
The Premier said, “This is about putting a spotlight on Road Town. With the private sector driving innovation and investment, the Government facilitating and regulating, and the community actively engaged, we can transform our capital together.”
The RTP has been meeting since May to review longstanding development proposals and chart a path forward for the revitalisation of Road Town. It has also identified key priorities and potential strategies centered on four main areas:
- Infrastructure upgrades, including roads, sidewalks, and public transportation
- Enhanced public amenities, such as restrooms, shaded areas, and recreational spaces
- Pedestrian-friendly improvements, promoting a safer, more walkable environment
- Sustainable waste management and environmental enhancement
The geographic scope of the RTP’s development plan extends from the Prospect Reef Roundabout to the Port Purcell Roundabout, encompassing key commercial hubs, Main Street, Station Avenue’s civic centre, and waterfront areas. This comprehensive approach aims to ensure that all parts of Road Town benefit from revitalisation efforts, many of which have long been envisioned but not yet realised.
The first public consultation on July 2 will be an open forum for residents, business owners, and other stakeholders to review preliminary ideas, offer feedback, and contribute to shaping the roadmap for the capital’s transformation. Additional consultations will be held with local businesses and construction and building trade members interested in joining the partnership.
Government Co-Chair of the RTP Committee and Junior Minister for Tourism and Culture Honourable Luce Hodge-Smith said, “We believe the voices of our people are the foundation of this initiative.”
Private Sector Co-Chair and Managing Director of Maria’s by the Sea Hotel, Ms. Lorna Christopher added, “The Road Town Partnership is about listening, collaborating, and co-creating a capital that reflects the aspirations of all who live and work here.”
The RTP Committee includes representatives from the Government and key industries such as retail, hospitality, financial services, and banking. It is supported by a technical and advisory panel comprising public sector leaders responsible for Road Town infrastructure, business associations including the BVI Chamber of Commerce, marina operators, and civil society representatives residing in the capital.
The Government has committed $1.2 million to jumpstart projects in 2025. The Premier has pledged continued funding, and the Government is encouraging the private sector to contribute to specific revitalisation projects through the Recovery and Development Agency (RDA), which will be responsible for implementation upon the Cabinet’s approval.
RTP Finance Chair and Partner at Appleby Global Jeffrey Kirk said, “Enhancing Road Town enhances the quality of life for everyone who lives, works, and does business here. These investments, will generate long-term benefits for the entire community.”
