Secondary school students and youth between the ages of 14 and 21 are invited to register for the Department of Youth Affairs’ Junior Scientists Easter Programme.

The department is spearheading this initiative as it continues to raise awareness among the Territory’s youth about the number of natural resources available in the Virgin Islands.

Acting Director of the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports, Mrs. Brenda Lettsome-Tye said that the programme engages students who have a strong interest in the area of science.

Mrs. Lettsome-Tye said, “This programme has various modules that look at different areas and aspects of science giving young people the opportunity to apply the skills learned in preserving our natural environment.”

The objective of the Junior Scientists Programme is to raise an awareness of the natural resources available to Virgin Islands residents by involving youth in activities that will bring about enhancement and conservation of these resources which will in turn help combat the negative practices as related to the natural environment.

The programme will be facilitated by Elmore Stoutt High School Science teacher, Mr. Jephet Gordon and will seek to tap into the young participants’ creative side, provide an outlet for self-expression and expose participants to the various science fields that exist so that they understand the opportunities that are available to them in that particular area.

Registration can be done at the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports for a fee of $30.00. The programme will begin Tuesday, March 29 with an orientation session commencing at 9:00 a.m. in the Elmore Stoutt High School Biology Laboratory room. The programme will conclude Monday, April 4.
