Acting Director of the Public Works Department, Mr. Jeremy Hodge has said that the Public Works Department (PWD) is engaged in heightened road maintenance activities in preparation for the hurricane season and to ensure continued public safety.

Mr. Hodge said the Atlantic Hurricane Season began on June 1, and will officially end on November 30. He said as the Territory works to develop its collective disaster readiness and security during this time of increased risk, the Public Works Department plans to ensure the soundness of the Territory’s infrastructure as best as possible.

“Prior to and as we officially enter the 2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season, we continue to clear drains and ghuts throughout the Territory,” the Acting Director said, adding, “Road asphalt patching and some bush cutting will be more apparent as we continue to experience increased rain showers heading into the season; along with speed bump placements where safety is of concern.”

Mr. Hodge indicated that while most remedial road works are initiated by the Public Works Department, the placement of speed bumps are a collaborative effort, as they are only placed in communities throughout the Territory at the request of District Representatives on behalf of the community members in an effort to mitigate concerns for safety.

The public is asked to be mindful of the movement of heavy equipment along road ways from Virgin Gorda to Jost Van Dyke and be patient with workers as they carry out the necessary road works.

The Department of Public Works remains committed to providing a safe, practical, efficient, economically and environmentally sound infrastructure that is well designed, constructed and maintained in accordance with recognised regional and international codes and standards and is in harmony with the Territory's social and economic goals.
