Press Release
Forty-Six (46) public officers living and working on Virgin Gorda have completed the Public Service 101 Course that will aid them in the successful execution of their duties.
The public officers who serve in various departments all received vital information on the Government’s history and operations in the session held from November 7 to 9.
Permanent Secretary (PS) in the Office of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Sharleen DaBreo-Lettsome, MBE said, “We have a responsibility to ensure that public officers serving in every square mile of the Territory receive the opportunity to learn and develop their abilities. Public Service 101, and by extension the Virgin Islands Public Service Learning Institute (VIPSLI) is the driving force that will allow this to happen.”
Mrs. DaBreo-Lettsome expressed joy in seeing public officers on the Sister Island receive this important training. The PS said, “Before we do anything else, we have to ensure that public officers are knowledgeable about the organisation they have committed to serving in. As we continue to develop the Public Service on Virgin Gorda, this achievement is a stepping stone to the greatness we foresee.”
The public officers received detailed presentations from leaders in various sectors across the Public Service. They were also encouraged to sign on to the Toastmasters Club and the Civil Service Association for opportunities in personal development and unification.
Permanent Secretaries; Deputy Financial Secretary, Mr. Jeremy Vanterpool and Director of Customer Service, Ms. Kedimone Rubaine, among others, made presentations to the officers on areas that are key to successful and efficient service delivery.
A panel of past and present public officers also addressed the public officers. They included past Deputy Secretary, Mr. Andrew St. Hillaire; past Postmaster General, Ms. Lorraine Walters; retired Teacher and Principal, who served for over 45 years, Mrs. Gracia Stevens; Fire Officer, Mr. Anthony Winchester and Sister Islands Programme Unit Coordinator, Mrs. Monel Nickie. The panel addressed the public officers on how to navigate life as a public officer, facing conflicts, planning for success and other discussions.
The completion of the Public Service 101 course on Virgin Gorda marks an important step in the life of the Virgin Islands Public Service Institute, as the Department of Human Resources continues to forge forward with ensuring all public officers receive opportunities for their growth.
The Government of the Virgin Islands remains committed to ensuring public officers receive the learning and development opportunities needed to be successful in their roles.
