Deputy Chief Planner currently on rotation in the Deputy Governor’s Office Mr. Dylan Penn and Director of Culture, Dr. Katherine Smith have participated in a workshop to better understand the importance of the impact of climate change on the cultural sector.
The Public Officers attended the Disaster Resilience in the Caribbean’s Culture Sector workshop in Barbados hosted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) on March 11 and 12.
The aim of the workshop was to raise awareness between cultural managers and disaster risk management actors to build resilience in the Caribbean cultural sector; develop a roadmap for enhanced cooperation between cultural managers and national disaster management offices; and review the framework for guiding disaster risk management for the cultural sector.
The participants learned about the Caribbean Disaster Management (CDM) strategy and culture in an effort to better understand the disaster risks to the culture sector to the Caribbean.
The CDM strategy also seeks to enhance disaster preparedness for effective response to build back better in recovery, rehabilitation and the reconstruction of culture, while strengthening the collaboration between culture managers and national disaster management offices.
UNESCO is the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. It seeks to build peace through international cooperation in Education, the Sciences and Culture.
