Premier and Minister of Finance Dr. the Honourable D. Orlando Smith, OBE said he is pleased with the announcement by BVI Airways that its first BAe Avro RJ100  regional four engine jet, the Spirit of the Virgin Islands, will be arriving in the Territory at the end of this week for customary and usual flight demonstration and ground personnel training.

He said this announcement is a reminder that the Government of the Virgin Islands is committed to its promise of a non-stop service between the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport and the Miami International Airport.

“This announcement means that we are one step closer to our goal where travelers will soon be able to get to a major international hub from major metropolitan centers around the world,” Premier Smith said.

He added, "As the British Virgin Islands continue to build international relationships, I continue to recognise that economic development in the BVI today is limited by our ability to participate in the global marketplace through the quick and expeditious movement of people to and from the Territory. Air access is as a key and vital component to the successful future of the BVI."

Premier Smith explained that direct air access to the Territory is a game changer for our economy - both in tourism and financial services.

“So, today’s announcement is indeed indicative of my Government’s resolve to do all that we can to maintain and improve our economy for the benefit of present and future generations of Virgin Islanders and residents.  I look forward to the actual launch of service.”
