Education from a historical perspective is being explored by author Dr. Charles H. Wheatley in his recently launched book titled “Voices and Visions of Education Heroes, Leaders and Elders: A History of Education in the British Virgin Islands”.

Dr. Wheatley said the book, which is his first publication, addresses issues in education from a historical perspective, with the characteristics of each historical period clarifying the roots from which the Territory’s educational growth started. He said, “I highlight the struggles and triumphs of the leaders, elders and heroes to the growth of the educational system, focusing on the period between 1834 and 2016.”

Dr. Wheatley said his intentions are that persons will read the book and enjoy it while being informed about a portion of the Territory’s history and heritage.

“I tried to put together a book that would interest students and also the ordinary man on the street because I wanted everybody to be interested in their heritage and to learn as much as they can about their own country and their growth,” he said.

Minister for Education, Culture, Youth Affairs, Fisheries and Agriculture, Dr. the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley, in remarks at the launch, commended Dr. Wheatley and added that he is more than qualified to write a book of this nature.

“Dr. Charles Wheatley has functioned at every level. In fact not just function, he has led at every level of our education system,” Honourable Wheatley said, adding, “From Teacher to Principal to Chief Education Officer to President of the college to chairman of the board of Governors; just about every level that you can think of and at this point I believe that it is truly an unselfish act to start thinking about using all of that knowledge and all of that experience not just for this current generation but generations to come.”

Honourable Wheatly also encouraged other persons to write down the wealth of information about the Virgin Islands in books.

Local author Mrs. Jennie Wheatley gave a brief back story of how the book came about and encouraged persons to read the publication in small portions to achieve its highest recollections.

“I want you to dip in and dip out. It makes you remember your past and then you can take the book and pass it on,” Mrs. Wheatley added.

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth Affairs, Fisheries and Agriculture has committed to purchasing 60 books to equip students and teachers in the public system with its knowledge.
