The cultural and economical impact of fishing to the Virgin Islands will be celebrated on Fisherman’s Day rescheduled for Sunday, July 16.

This year’s activities were postponed from June 30 due to the inclement weather and will now be held at Long Bay Beach, Beef Island under the theme, “Sustainable Fisheries in 2017.”

Coordinator Mr. Samuel Davies said the day is a family affair and an opportunity for residents to celebrate the tradition of fishing in the Virgin Islands.

Mr. Davies said fishers are very important to the community, as they contribute to the economy, through the provision of food and business.  

He said, “July 16 will be a day of fun and learning as persons will be entertained and educated on the different methods of fishing and other facts on the marine environment.”  Mr. Davis added that the highlight of the day will be the Fishing Tournament where participants will compete in the categories of reef fishing and trolling.  

The tournament will begin at 4:00 a.m. and 1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd place prizes will be awarded to winners in both categories.

Interested persons are encouraged to register at the Conservation and Fisheries Department located in the Quastisky Building in Road Town. A registration fee of $100 is required for the reef fishing competition and $150 for the trolling competition.

Beach-side activities will commence at 10:00 a.m. These include solider crab races for children, free health screening by the BVI Health Services Authority, fish cleaning demonstrations and entertainment provided by local DJs and VIBE and the Showtime Band.
