Director of the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, Mr Theodore E James, is urging fishers and farmers to take precautionary steps to ensure their safety and protect their assets during this hurricane season.

Mr James said the department recognises the importance of preparedness in mitigating the potential risks associated with severe weather events, and is urging fishers and farmers to implement proactive measures in preparing for such events.

The Director stated, “The safety of our fishers and the sustainability of fisheries and farms are paramount concerns for the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries. Fishers and farmers must be well-prepared to weather the impacts of a hurricane and safeguard their livelihoods.”

He said farmers and fishers should ensure that their property is secured, review insurance policies, stock up on emergency supplies such as food, water, first aid kits, flashlights, batteries and other essentials, and develop a communication plan to ensure that everyone knows how to reach each other in emergencies.

The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries is dedicated to promoting the sustainable development of fisheries and farming sectors while ensuring the safety of both industries. The department continues to support fishers and farmers' livelihoods and safeguard the marine resources essential to our economy and environment.
