The Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth Affairs, Fisheries and Agriculture is offering an orientation session for parents on Facebook for the online learning/remote learning programme.

Chief Education Officer (CEO), Mrs. Connie George, said that given the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ministry of Education has taken education to the virtual classroom.

“Training and preparation have been ongoing for educators since April 3 on readiness for online learning.  As we are getting ready to begin the Trinity term in earnest, we will be dependent on parents and guardians to ensure that students are engaged” Mrs. George stated.

The Facebook LIVE session will be held on Tuesday, April 28 at 5:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on the Government of the Virgin Islands Facebook Page @BVIGovernment.

The Chief Education Officer will moderate the programme, while the Minister for Education, Culture, Youth Affairs, Fisheries and Agriculture, Dr. the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley will give remarks and share the plans for the Trinity term.

”Persons viewing will also be given an overview of the platforms being used, demonstrating to parents steps to access students’ VISchools accounts.” Mrs. George said.

The CEO added, Parents and students will receive guidance in switching between multiple Google accounts, how to join a Cisco Webex meeting, accessing Google Classroom and ClassDoJo. They will also receive guidance on completing assignments and taking assessments on Google Classroom.”

Furthermore, parents’ best practices for assisting children with remote learning will be illustrated.

This presentation will be conducted by Google certified experts and is a collaboration with UniteBVI. Parents and guardians can ask questions and get answers during the LIVE orientation and will be given the contact information for the Information Communications Technology (ICT) Unit for further clarity on the remote learning interface, as necessary.

In addition to this session, training clips will be created and circulated via social media throughout the course of this week to assist parents.
