The Department of Information and Public Relations (more commonly referred to as GIS) began the initiative in February, with a view to providing the public with a more convenient option to receive updates on Government’s activities.

Premier and Minister for Information, Dr. the Honourable D. Orlando Smith, OBE said, “My Government is working towards ensuring a prosperous Virgin Islands, with an engaged people, well-prepared to fully participate in the development of this Territory. To engage, you must be informed; which is why GIS is working closely with the Government, to provide information to the public.”

Premier Smith also urged the public to become more familiar with the Government’s website – bvi.gov.vg and also encouraged persons to join the GIS subscribers list, where updates on all Government’s projects can be sent directly to your emails.

Persons can join the GIS email subscribers list by visiting bvi.gov.vg, scrolling to the bottom of the page, and clicking on the “Click here to subscribe” button. From there, persons are asked to type in their name and email address, and are automatically added to the subscribers list.  Alternately, persons can email gis@gov.vg with their request.

Chief Information Officer, Ms. Desiree Smith said, “The GIS Email Subscribers List lends itself to the department’s overall mandates, which are to accomplish a heightened awareness of Government’s policies and initiatives; easy public access to relevant and accurate information; timely and accurate dissemination of information; and improved understanding of Government functions.”

GIS services include public relations, advertising and promotion in support of the communication objectives of ministries/departments;graphic design services,from concept todigitaland print production of all sorts; photographic services of official events and functions; video/audio services which include a digital library for convenient and quick access to information; in addition to on-line services via the Government's Portal (bvi.gov.vg).
