The Government of the Virgin Islands has signed a contract for significant works on the Virgin Islands Fire and Rescue Service Headquarters Tender Bay.

Minister of Communications and Works, Honourable Kye M. Rymer expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating that this phase of enhancing and refurbishing the Fire Headquarters underscores the government's commitment to enhancing public safety and emergency response capabilities across the Territory.

Honourable Rymer said, “This initiative is part of a broader strategy to support the Fire and Rescue Service in its mission to protect the community and ensure public safety. The government remains committed to investing in the necessary infrastructure and equipment to enable the service to carry out its duties efficiently.”

The contract was awarded to Trojan Design and Development Limited, in the sum of One million, thirty-five thousand, three hundred and sixty-nine dollars and seventy-five cents ($1,035,369.75), and will see the improvement of the facilities and resources available to the Fire and Rescue Service. Key aspects of the project include:

  • Housing Nine Tenders: Currently there is no capacity for housing nine (9) tenders, appliances and trucks.
  • Enhance Security: Provide enhanced security measures such as security cameras; external and internal lighting to all sides of the tender bay; and security control systems.
  • Electronic Operations: Electronically operated with a manual option rapid open roll up gates to enclose the bay to both the front and back, with control systems to be routed to the main control area.
  • Access Control: Procuring and installing a main control gate and access control system to manage the gates of the fire tender bay.
  • Drainage: Drainage of the new roof of the tender bay in conjunction with the adjacent fire station structure and upgrade of the drainage at the ground floor level of the new tender bay.
  • Design: Design considerations for appending the new tender bay to the existing fire station and making good to all damages incurred during the construction process to the adjacent fire station.
  • Flood Considerations: Incorporation of the adjacent diesel tank area into the design structure to ensure this structure is above the flood zone which may include reconstruction or additional extension of the existing structure.
  • Redress Perimeter Fence: Construction of approximately 400 linear feet of a combination of concrete base with chain link fence at the top of the concrete base with a main electronically controlled with a manual option entrance gate to include design details.
  • Training: Preparation of as-built drawings, manuals, training of personnel of specific equipment and commissioning of the main control system for the operation of the gates, cameras and access control systems.

The government is committed to transparency and will keep the public informed about the progress of the works as they unfold. The project is expected to commence shortly, with a timeline for completion to be announced.
