Teachers in the Virgin Islands are being celebrated this week, in observance of Teachers’ Week, from October 2 to 8.

Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn said, “Teachers dedicate their lives to providing a positive example for the children in their care. They are not only educators; they are role models, social workers, disciplinarians and much more. For this, we salute them.”

Acting Chief Education Officer Mrs. Connie George said, “Teachers are the core of our educational system. We lean on them to nurture and instruct our children from infancy through their teenage years. Let us all acknowledge their hard work by celebrating teachers for Teachers Week. Teachers, I salute you and thank you for all your hard work in working with our students.”

Mrs. George added that parents and guardians of school aged children can encourage their children to prepare special cards, gift bags, fruit baskets and other small tokens of appreciation to teachers.

The BVI Teachers Union has planned a number of activities for the enjoyment of teachers including a free Zumba workout at Firebird Dance Studios, UP’s Cineplex today at 7:15 p.m.; an Open House at various schools on Wednesday, October 5; and Happy Hour at Aromas at Tortola Pier Park on Friday, October 7 at 6:00 p.m. A bowling tournament is scheduled for next Thursday, October 13 at Save the Seed Centre.
