Premier and Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Sustainable Development, Honourable Dr. Natalio D. Wheatley, proudly welcomed the inaugural flight of Caribbean Airlines to the Virgin Islands today, October 14. This service, linking the Virgin Islands with key Caribbean destinations, represents a significant advancement in regional connectivity and promises to invigorate the territory's tourism industry.

The established route, now connecting the Virgin Islands to Puerto Rico, Antigua, and Barbados, significantly broadens travel options for both residents and visitors. This development not only promotes tourism but also strengthens vital intra-regional economic ties, creating sustainable development opportunities in the Virgin Islands.

Premier Wheatley stated, "This inaugural flight represents more than enhanced connectivity; it is a testament to our unwavering commitment to nurturing relationships within the Caribbean community. By bridging our islands through reliable air travel, we unlock opportunities for economic prosperity, cultural exchange, and deeper connections among our peoples."

With improved connectivity, the Virgin Islands anticipates a substantial influx of visitors, revitalising the tourism sector and creating opportunities for local businesses and artisans. This milestone not only enriches our guests' experiences but also supports our vibrant community's livelihoods.

In alignment with the Government's commitment to sustainable development, Premier Wheatley underscored the importance of preserving the Virgin Islands' unique culture and natural environment while fostering growth in the tourism sector. "As we embrace this exciting chapter in tourism, we remain steadfast in our commitment to sustainability. We must ensure that our development aligns with our responsibility to protect the unique environment and culture of the Virgin Islands, allowing future generations to enjoy our beautiful home," he noted.

The collaboration between the Virgin Islands Airports Authority and Caribbean Airlines began in 2019. Both teams diligently worked to establish this vital service despite facing significant challenges, including the restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Government of the Virgin Islands is resolutely committed to enhancing the tourism sector, promoting sustainable development, and preserving the Virgin Islands' rich cultural heritage. Through strategic partnerships and community engagement, we aim to foster economic growth and elevate the quality of life for all residents.
