The Virgin Islands has received commendation from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) for its leadership in health information systems.
PAHO’s Representative for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean Countries, Dr. Godfrey Xureb commended the Territory during a Programmatic Prioritization for Strategic Plan meeting held at a workshop on June 24.
Dr. Xureb addressed the relationship and the status of projects done with PAHO and the BVI stating, “We have had successful projects. We have the psychosocial support project which is going very well with the CDB [Caribbean Development Bank] grant. We just had the agreement that PAHO is going to help implement the EU grant for the re-structuring of the emergency shelters…..and also we plan in the very near future to help with the evaluation of the whole setup of the health insurance system and supporting the country as it deals with non-communicable and communicable diseases.”
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Social Development, Ms. Petrona Davies said the two-day meeting allowed for a level of engagement what is essential to Strategic Management which is central to health policy and administration.
The workshop targeted senior health officials and technicians from the national health sector and the Ministry of Health and Social Development.
The objective was to improve the understanding of the PAHO/WHO planning process; discuss achievement and lessons learned for the current biennium with recommendations for adjustments where necessary; and agree on implementation of plans and proposed programme budget for the next biennium.
The Ministry of Health and Social Development aspires to provide a caring and integrated system of health and social services that facilitate human development and improve quality of life in the British Virgin Islands.
