Minister for Health and Social Development Honourable Vincent O. Wheatley said the 36th Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS)/Pooled Procurement Service (PPS) Policy Board Meeting emphasised the importance of collaboration to afford pharmaceuticals and health equipment in the OECS region.

The Policy Board meeting featured remarks from the OECS Director General His Excellency, Dr. Didacus Jules, outgoing chair of the OECS/PPS Policy Board and Antigua and Barbuda’s Minister of Health, Wellness, and the Environment Sir Molwyn Joseph and incoming chair Honourable Wheatley who stressed the importance of collaboration amongst OECS member states to achieve elite and affordable healthcare.

Honourable Wheatley explained, “We had very robust discussions on various issues but for us the overarching message was the need for greater collaboration in terms of increasing purchasing power of pharmaceuticals and standardising equipment throughout the region.”

The Health Minister added, “Not only do you get affordable prices but you are able to share supplies whether it is reagents or parts when you have standardizsed equipment. So, trying to get that done is a mammoth task but it is something that we are committed to do.”

The meeting also had presentations from Roselyn Opel, Head of Pooled Procurement Services (OECS/PPS); Kerlene Jankee, Core Portfolio Accounting Manager, OECS Commission and representatives from Direct Relief.

The Ninth OECS Council of Ministers: Health commences today, October 11.
