Of the 345 fifth form students in secondary schools across the Territory who wrote the 2015 School Leaving Examinations, 253 have successfully completed the academic requirements for graduation.

The Territory-wide graduating class of 2015 includes 83 honour students who are required to achieve a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 to 3.9; and six high honour students who maintained a GPA of 4.0 to 4.3.

The Ministry of Education and Culture has confirmed that 64 students are yet to complete the National Citizen Service Programme and have been placed on a “Graduation Pending Completion of National Citizen Hours” list.

Minister for Education and Culture, Honourable Myron V. Walwyn stated that the ministry is extending the deadline to Tuesday, June 23, for final submission of service logs and reflective essays to assist students in achieving graduation status.

The requirements for graduation this year was amended to include passes in at least five subjects including Mathematics and English, and the completion of the National Citizen Service Programme, an  initiative requiring students to complete 120 hours of community service.

            In addition to the community service requirement, the ministry has introduced the Top 10 Mathematics Students and Top 10 English Students lists as a part of its results report.

The top achiever in Mathematics is Rhevaun Leander Sprauve of the Elmore Stoutt High School, who along with nine schoolmates is included in the Top 10 Mathematics Students, while the tenth student is from the BVI Seventh-day Adventist School.

Three of the Top 10 English students are from the Bregado Flax Educational Centre, three are from the Elmore Stoutt High School, two from the St. George’s Secondary School and one from the BVI Seventh-day Adventist School. The top achiever in English is Elmore Stoutt High School student, Creightanya Rose Brewley.

 Honourable Walwyn congratulated the students on their academic achievements. “I must offer special congratulations to the valedictorians and salutatorians who have excelled above and beyond,” he said, adding, “The top student of the Territory hails from the BVI SDA School, with an overall percentage pass rate of 91.72%, followed closely by two students from the Elmore Stoutt High School with GPAs of 91.03% and 90.25%.  Congratulations Zora Williams, Creightanya Brewley and Rhevaun Sprauve.”

Of the 28 students who were unsuccessful in meeting graduation requirements, 13 of them qualify for the six-month programme being offered by the Ministry of Education and Culture and will receive their School Leaving Certificates after successfully completing the programme.

Students who do not qualify to attend the six-month programme should contact the Examinations Officer within the Ministry of Education at telephone number 468-2036 for further options. 

Minister Walwyn encouraged the unsuccessful students to keep striving for excellence. He said, “Do not see your failure as the end; see it as a speed bump on the road of success. Pause to reflect, regroup and renew your attitude. With God, all things are possible and I know that success is possible.”

Graduation ceremonies will be held on Thursday, June 25 for the Elmore Stoutt High School on Tortola, Friday, June 26 for the Claudia Creque Educational Centre on Anegada, and Thursday, July 2 for the Bregado Flax Educational Centre on Virgin Gorda.
