Youth in the Territory between 15 and 29 years of age are invited to register for the 2017 Gen Y Factor singing auditions.

Acting Director of the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports (DYAS) Mrs. Brenda Lettsome-Tye said this year’s show is now a ‘District Battle Edition’.

She explained, “This time we wanted to get youth from each of the Territory’s nine districts involved. We are anticipating one finalist from each district, for a total of nine finalists on the night of the show on June 24. We are encouraging all the BVI’s talented singers to sign up.”

The registration form can be accessed online at username ‘DYAS BVI’ on Facebook; the Department of Youth Affairs Sports’ page on the Government of the Virgin Islands’ website, bvi@gov.vg; or by copying and pasting the following link: http://www.bvi.gov.vg/sites/default/files/resources/2017_gen_y_factoronline_form.pdf.

The deadline for submissions is January 31, 2017. Auditions will be held from February 20 to March 3, 2017. Registrants are required to sing acapella in front of a panel of judges. The top two registrants from each district will advance to the semi-finals.

Mrs. Lettsome-Tye said Gen Y Factor was inspired by the Virgin Islands National Youth Policy, adding, “Identity, Culture and Social Cohesion is one of the six goals of the policy. The identification and development of artistic talent - be it dance, spoken word or song fulfils the objectives of this goal. The Gen Y Factor Showcase and Talent Competition was created as a vehicle to enable youth to achieve this goal.”

The 2017 Gen Y Factor winner is expected to represent DYAS in relation to any of its youth or sports events and sponsorships, perform at DYAS sponsored events, conduct oneself as a DYAS ambassador, and also serve as a Digicel Brand Ambassador. Digicel is the premiere sponsor for the second year in a row.

For more information about the competition, persons can contact the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports at 468-4949.

The Ministry of Education and Culture is committed to creating a “Culture of Excellence”.
