The implementation of the national gender policy aims to promote gender equality, equity and social justice towards improving the quality of life for all citizens of the territory and to foster the pursuit of sustainable human development. The policy acknowledges the origins of traditional gender roles of all those who were born into and those who at present live and work in the Virgin Islands and promotes the need for changing gender roles and responsibilities, in response to the shifting social and economic conditions of the society over time. The policy aims to improve the relations between the sexes and to redress where possible gender imbalances. The vision of the gender policy is to combat and change systems that preserve the gender-based distribution of power and resources at the societal level, and to create the conditions for women and men to enjoy the same power and opportunities to influence their own lives.
