A protected area is defined as “an area of land and/or sea especially dedicated to the protection and maintenance of biological diversity, and of natural and associated cultural resources, and managed through legal or other effective means” (IUCN 1994).

There are approximately fifty one (51) designated protected areas in the current system of protected areas.  This includes national and marine parks, fisheries protected areas, a forestry reserve (Sage Mountain National Park), and water areas.  Depending on their designation, protected areas are currently managed by the National Parks Trust, Conservation and Fisheries Department or the Department of Agriculture.
