A video competition themed “Broadband: the future of innovation” has been launched by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC).

The video competition was launched in recognition of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) observed annually worldwide on May 17. The worldwide theme is “ICT entrepreneurship for social impact”.

Last year the TRC launched a video competition for students between the ages of 12-18, and the Commission has decided to give all interested persons a chance to enter the competition and capture the prizes in this year’s competition. The age groups for this year are ages 12 -18, and ages 19 and above.

Chief Executive Officer at the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission, Mr. Guy L. Malone, says that he is always eager to see how creative persons can get with the competition and he is even more excited to see what the older group brings to the table.

Mr. Malone said, “In 2009 the British Virgin Islands joined the rest of world for the first time in celebrating World Telecommunication and Information Society Day.  Each year as we celebrate, we invite the operators to join with us as we encourage the public to participate in various activities for raising awareness in relation to the technological possibilities that exist such as Broadband, LTE and 4th Generation (4G) technologies, and to encourage more people to get on-line.  Annually, there is a different spin on how

the event is celebrated and as we try to encompass everyone, this year the video competition is also opened to adults.”

The video must incorporate the theme and should be no longer than three (3) minutes. Deadline for submissions is June 24, distribution of prizes will be done at the TRC’s open house on July 8, 2016.

Prizes include an iPad Pro, iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 4. Persons can visit TRC’s website at www.trc.vg/WTISD or their Facebook page at facebook.com/TRCVI for registration forms and rules.  You can also telephone at 468-4165 for more information.

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is celebrated globally annually since 1969. The day’s observance helps bring awareness to the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT) can bring to societies and economies, as well as ways to bridge the digital divide.
