Press Release
Residents of the Virgin Islands will have the opportunity to showcase their talents and creativity in the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission’s annual video competition.
This year’s competition is held under the theme, “Accelerating Digital Transformation in challenging times” and was officially launched on May 17 in observance of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day.
Chief Executive Officer at the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission, Mr Guy Malone said the video competition has garnered the interest of innovative and creative illustrations of the various themes over the years and that he was excited to see entries for this year’s competition.
Mr. Malone added that the launch of this year’s competition will enhance the TRC’s public education and awareness strategy.
“The stories told through videos are engaging, educational and effect change in behaviour in the realm of telecommunications. I believe that the meaningful messages shared through video will highlight the importance of accelerating digital transformation in these challenging times,” he said.
The competition is open to everyone under two categories, youth, ages 12 to 18 years and adults 19 years and over. The video must incorporate the theme and should be no longer than five (5) minutes. The deadline for submission is June 25. To qualify, videos must be submitted to wtisd@trc.vg or admin_dept@trc.vg.
This year’s competition features cash prizes, with the winner of youth and adult categories awarded $1500 and $1000 respectively. For more information contact the TRC at 468-4165.
World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) has been observed annually worldwide since 1969. The day helps to bring awareness to the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT) can bring to societies and economies, as well as ways to bridge the digital divide. The British Virgin Islands joined the rest of world in observing World Telecommunication and Information Society Day in 2009.
