Minister for Communications and Works, Honourable Kye M. Rymer has said that preparations are already underway to re-establish a Community Bus Service in the Territory.

Honourable Rymer said the Government of the Virgin Islands recognised the need to re-establish a community based public transportation service through the arm of the Taxi and Livery Commission (TLC) and that the initiative will be rolled out by the Third quarter of 2024.

Honourable Rymer said, “The completion of the Road Town Market Square Bus Shelter was the first phase, as a designated space in the picking up and dropping off of persons wishing to be connected to their respective communities.”

Director of the Taxi and Livery Commission, Mr. Jevaughn Parsons said after the natural disasters of 2017 and the close of the National Bus Service contract, the initiative was dormant.  

Mr. Parsons said, “We are aware of the need for public transportation in the Territory. However we also recognised the need for a designated staging area for the organisation, transfer and movement of persons within the city.”

The director said, “On the roll out of the Community Bus Service, it is our hope that the Market Square Bus Stand will be the hub or terminal for persons desirous of being connected to their respective communities, by the Public Transport Operators who are members of the Community Bus Service conglomerate.”

The Ministry of Communications and Works remains dedicated to ensuring the continued development and maintenance of public infrastructure in keeping with international standards so that public utilities are reliable and affordable in support of an enhanced community life for every resident and visitor in the Virgin Islands.
