Press Release
- Expert UK advice enhances prison security
- Advanced equipment boosts safety and operational efficiency
- Prison officers celebrated at inaugural HMVIPS Staff Awards
His Majesty’s Virgin Islands Prison Service (HMVIPS) has received a comprehensive UK-funded support package aimed at enhancing prison security, safety, and staff protection.
This week, Mr. Lee Pilkington, Head of the National Locking Section for the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) Property Directorate, UK, visited HMP Balsam Ghut, bringing specialised tools and expertise used to maintain security across the UK prison estate. This groundbreaking deployment allowed the sharing of advanced security measures to reinforce safety for staff, inmates and the wider community.
Additionally, prison officers at HMP Balsam Ghut were equipped with state-of-the-art radios and ID cards funded by the UK Government. The radios enhance communication and coordination across the facility, significantly improving security and operational effectiveness. The ID cards streamline security processes, ensuring stricter access controls.
The upgraded radios have already proven instrumental in intercepting contraband items such as phones, drugs, weapons and alcohol. In one instance, an officer on perimeter patrol detected a package being thrown over the fence. With the radios’ swift communication capability, staff responded effectively, involving both prison and police teams.
Governor of the Virgin Islands, Mr Daniel Pruce, said: ‘Security provides a strong foundation for growth and prosperity. The safety and security of Virgin Islanders is my top priority and His Majesty’s Virgin Islands Prison Service is a key facet in that. By enhancing security at HMP Balsam Ghut and investing in protecting and equipping prison officers, we enable the prison service to transform lives and reduce the risk of reoffending, improving the overall security of the Virgin Islands and safety in our community.’
Superintendent of HMP Balsam Ghut, Mr. Jay Kendall added: ‘Fostering a culture of excellence at HMP Balsam Ghut is essential to safeguarding the Virgin Islands. I extend my gratitude to our UK Ministry of Justice partners for their invaluable investment in our prison service and its future.’
A further milestone for HMVIPS was reached on Wednesday, 4 December 2024, with the hosting of its inaugural Staff Awards event at Government House. This celebration honoured the exceptional contributions of prison employees, also honouring key stakeholders in fostering an environment of excellence and inclusivity. The highlight of the evening was the recognition of Prison Officer Rodriguez as Prison Officer of the Year 2024.
This package of UK support underscores the shared commitment to enhancing public safety and building a robust, rehabilitative prison system in the Virgin Islands.
