World Food Day will be observed in the Virgin Islands with a Cultural Food Fair hosted by the Department of Agriculture.

Ag. Chief Agricultural Officer Mrs. Arona Fahie-Forbes said the event will he held on Friday, October 19 behind the Central Administration Complex at 10:00 a.m.

She said, “The food fair will create a venue for crop producers’ (farmers), fishermen, and entrepreneurs to showcase their talents in cooking, gardening, bakes, pastries, preserves, poetry and produce.”

Mrs. Fahie-Forbes  added that the fair also gives the BVI community an intricate look at information sharing surrounding World Food Day and aims to unite producers, supermarkets, proprietors and the community to create a sense of BVI identity and an overall greater appreciation for the need to produce more.

World Food Day is observed annually on October 16 by 150 countries across the world in support of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The mission is to raise awareness and gather greater support and understanding to the approaches that can help to end world hunger.

Mrs. Fahie-Forbes further added that several departments will collaborate with the Department of Agriculture by hosting booths and making presentations on different food production methods. There will also be musical entertainment from various local artistes.

This year’s World Food Day celebrations will be observed under the theme “OUR ACTIONS ARE OUR FUTURE. A #ZEROHUNGER WORLD BY 2030 IS POSSIBLE”.

The Department of Agriculture supports the World Food Day initiative and is committed to being the premier catalyst for sustainable agricultural production, institutional change and agricultural development in the agricultural sector.
