Press Release
Residents of the Virgin Islands are encouraged to take care of their mental, physical, spiritual and social health as the Territory observes World Health Day.
Public Health Officer, Ms. Renee Leonard said that this year’s theme, ‘Health for All’ is reflective of the mission to get everyone involved in taking care of their health, which will bring the Territory one-step closer towards a healthier Virgin Islands.
Ms. Leonard stated that taking care of one’s health has never been more important than it is today and this can be done with a few changes to their daily routine. These changes she added will positively affect their mental wellness, nutrition, physical activity and sleep.
“When you are feeling down or stressed out, try to find positive ways to cope with the stressors of life, instead of succumbing to negative coping mechanisms,” Ms. Leonard said, adding, “Persons can try techniques such as connecting with nature, seeking professional help, praying and practicing gratitude.”
The Public Health Officer also advocated for a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, while limiting processed foods, sugar and salt.
Persons are also encouraged to be more active. The World Health Organization recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous physical activity per week.
Ms. Leonard said that similar to air, water and food, sleep is essential to our health because it can help to lower stress levels, prevent sickness and enhance cognitive function.
World Health Day is observed annually on April 7 to draw attention to a specific health topic of concern to people all over the world. The date also marks the anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organization in 1948.
Persons interested in more information about World Health Day can contact Ms. Leonard at 468-2273.
The Ministry of Health and Social Development is committed to improving the health of the people of the Virgin Islands.
