Secretary General of the BVI National Commission for UNESCO, Dr. Allison Flax-Archer is encouraging students to continue reading even in times of disaster.

Dr. Flax-Archer said, “Reading helps you to get through certain situations and helps you gain the knowledge you need every day in school. Reading provides enjoyment.” She added, “I want to continue to encourage you to read. If you don’t like reading, consider digging deep and finding a topic in a book that is of interest to you because reading is life.”

Reading is Fun Week was observed from October 7 to 13. The week of activities concluded with a donation of eight Ti Koko and Kush Kush books to the Althea Scatliffe Primary School library from local author, Dr. Patricia G. Turnbull in partnership with the BVI National Commission of UNESCO and Rotary Sunrise.

Other presentations were made to the school by the New Life Baptist Church along with the reading of an excerpt of Dr. Turnbull’s books.

Meanwhile, students of the Ebenezer Thomas Primary School marched from their school to The Boys Gas Station, in Sea Cows Bay in celebration of ‘Reading is Fun Week’.

Students were dressed in their favorite storybooks and words, as they sang and reminded the community that their success depends on reading.

Education Officer for Languages, Mrs. Janice George-Harris said that parents should continue to inspire children to read throughout the year and make it fun.

Mrs. George-Harris added, “It is our desire that reading becomes a common part of our daily routine. Reading is Fun Week initiates that, the love for reading.”

The literacy rate in the Territory is reported to be at 97.8% and the Ministry of Education and Culture continues to aim for 100%.

Reading is Fun Week has been celebrated in the Territory since 1992. This year’s theme was “Reading is the Best Remedy”.
