Statement By Honourable Vincent O. Wheatley
Minister For Health And Social Development
On Diabetes Month
1 NOVEMBER 2024
Diabetes Month is observed every November, with World Diabetes Day observed on 14th November. This year, Diabetes Month aims to educate the public on the different types of diabetes, risk factors, prevention strategies, and the critical importance of early detection and management. The theme for World Diabetes Day is, “With appropriate access to diabetes care and support for their well-being, everyone with diabetes has the chance to live well.” In the Virgin Islands, this year, our focus is on taking action to prevent diabetes-related health issues and raising awareness.
Diabetes can lead to serious complications affecting the eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart, and has even been linked to some cancers. These observances provide a platform to educate the public about diabetes, its associated risks, prevention methods, and the importance of early management. They also support individuals with diabetes, along with their families and healthcare providers, in efforts to control the disease and promote better health outcomes.
Taking control of one’s health is essential in preventing diabetes-related issues. Knowing your risk for type 2 diabetes is the first step. High risk factors include being overweight, being age 35 or older, a family history of diabetes, certain racial or ethnic backgrounds, physical inactivity, and prediabetes.
Effectively managing diabetes requires monitoring blood glucose, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels through regular A1C tests, blood pressure readings, and cholesterol checks. Healthy lifestyle choices such as balanced meals, regular physical activity, sufficient sleep, and abstaining from smoking can help prevent or manage diabetes. Taking medications as prescribed and consulting with a healthcare provider if adherence challenges arise, is also essential. Maintaining a healthy weight, even with a modest 5-7% reduction from your starting weight, can substantially lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Diabetes management can be emotionally taxing. Support from mental health professionals or peer groups can offer valuable coping strategies. Additionally, working closely with a healthcare team, which may include a primary care provider, diabetes specialist, dietitian, or certified diabetes educator, is vital for effective, comprehensive diabetes care. There are various support options available through the BVI Diabetes Association, including individual and group resources to better support diabetes management.
The Ministry of Health and Social Development will be launching a continuing education program, featuring world-renowned experts to sensitise healthcare providers on the PAHO Better Care for NCDs (Non-Communicable Diseases) and the HEARTS approach to clinical care. This two-part series will include contributions from global clinical experts, WHO Collaborating Centres experts and PAHO’s Washington and Caribbean staff. These sessions will focus on sensitising local clinicians on these evidence-based approaches to care, in preparation for PAHO’s technical assistance in implementing them within the Virgin Islands. Additionally, the Ministry will kick off a mini-awareness campaign for World Diabetes Day on 14th November, with a broader educational campaign launching later on this month.
Physical activity plays a crucial role in diabetes prevention. The Ministry’s ‘BVI Moves’ programme promotes community-based physical activity, focusing on walking at this time. Bi-monthly walks are held, with the next walk scheduled for 9th November, in collaboration with the ‘Breast Friends’ Breast Cancer awareness activity. Coincidentally, on the same day, the BVI Diabetes Association will host the Elton Georges Annual Run/Walk. There are several options to consider, please support one of these activities.
The BVI Diabetes Association also has a number of activities scheduled for this month and I encourage everyone to come out in numbers and tune in, where applicable, to support these important initiatives.
Some of the activities include:
5th – 8th November – Diabetes Awareness T-Shirt Sale
9th November - Elton Georges Annual Run/Walk
13th November – Free Eye Screening, West End Community Centre
14th November – Human Circle, Cyril B Romney Tortola Pier Park
