Acting Director of Shipping in the Virgin Islands Shipping Registry, Captain Raman Bala AFNI is pictured here during the recently held public meeting for persons with interests in maritime affairs. He was addressing queries raised on the effects of the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 on BVI mariners, yacht owners and other stakeholders.

The meeting was held on Thursday, July 16, to educate the seafaring community on how the Convention 2006 would affect them as Government moves to conform or adopt it into local maritime laws. This convention which deals with Seafarer’s living and working conditions onboard ships, is also known as the Seafarers’ Bill of Rights and came into force internationally in August 2014. The Virgin Islands Shipping Registry will continue to reach out to stakeholders to sensitise them of their responsibilities under the Convention. (Photo Credit: Ronnielle Frazer/GIS)
