Twelve recruits from three critical agencies have been trained to administer lifesaving techniques in the event of an emergency.

Recruits from the British Virgin Islands Airport Authority (BVIAA), Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) and the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) were taught basic First Aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques which can be applied to individuals in medical distress.

The training was held at the DDM on Wednesday, May 10 and serves as a pre-requisite for other emergency medical training to be delivered later this month.

Director of the DDM, Sharleen DaBreo said basic First Aid and CPR are valuable skills for individuals at any organisation but they are also entry level requirements for personnel who work within emergency response agencies.

The Director said, “In 2016 the DDM agreed to support the training needs of recruits entering these agencies.  We have therefore partnered with local and regional organisations to deliver the training that is required for these new officers.”

Ms. DaBreo  added, “The DDM reached out to the BVI Health Services Authority who was willing to provide Paramedic, Rodney Brathwaite and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Eric Thompson to assist with the delivery of the First Aid and CPR training.  The trainers delivered a very practical training programme that provided opportunities for continuous testing of skills.”

Lead Instructor, Mr. Brathwaite said he was pleased to collaborate with the DDM on this initiative and anticipated a continued partnership in ensuring more persons are knowledgeable of what to do if they are the first responders during an emergency or disaster situation.

Mr. Brathwaite explained, “The first person at the scene of an accident becomes the first responder and this individual may not necessarily be a medical professional.  This is why it is so important for as many persons as possible to receive this type of training.”

The training required participants to recognise and deal with minor injuries, conduct patient assessments, use First Aid kits and supplies, and practice CPR techniques. It is certified through the American Heart Association and is valid for two years.
