Premier and Minister for Tourism, Dr. the Honourable D. Orlando Smith, OBE is confident that the tourism sector of the British Virgin Islands is on the move again, as the Territory continues on the path to economic progress through Shared Sustainable Growth.

During the 2016 Budget Address delivered on February 8, Premier Smith said he will continue to pay close attention to the overall management of the sector to ensure, that as a destination, there is delivery on the experience our cruise and overnight visitors demand.

Premier Smith added that the Cruise Pier and Pier Park facility has already proven its value to the Territory’s growth and competitiveness in tourism. He said he was especially proud of the involvement of the British Virgin Islands business community in this project, and commended them for their excitement in preparing for its official opening on February 16.

The Honourable Premier said it is expected that the improvements to our tourism infrastructure will not only help to sustain and grow our tour, taxi and commercial subsectors, but will provide new employment opportunities and provide for more long term land or sea visitations. They will also provide for the revitalisation, development and exhibition of our culture, proud heritage and historical sites.

Premier Smith said the significant number of historic sites throughout the Territory is proof that the BVI has a story to tell. He added, “We will tell that story for the benefit of our visitors and continue to construct the tapestry of national pride in our people.”

This budget will see the continuation of the implementation of the Territory’s tourism infrastructure project which will be spread over the next three budgets.

Premier Smith commended the work done by the Board and the team at the BVI Tourist Board in putting this detailed plan together.

He said, “I look forward to the same level of energy as we move to the implementation phase, and am expecting great things from our Junior Minister for Tourism Honourable Archibald Christian as he moves this agenda forward.”

The Government of the Virgin Islands remains committed to ensuring efficient use of the fiscal resources. Click here to access the 2016 Budget Address by Premier and Minister of Finance Dr. the Honourable D. Orlando Smith, OBE.
