Minister for Health and Social Development Honourable Vincent O. Wheatley and a team of health officials have met to discuss the viability of the Pockword Pond incinerator.

Included in the discussions was President and General Manager of Pennram Diversified Manufacturing Corporation Mr. Andy Hooker whose company boasts a resume of over 25 years of experience in the incineration industry.

Mr. Hooker was in the Territory this week to conduct a full assessment of the incinerator after which he is expected to provide a fully detailed written report to the ministry. The report is expected to guide the decision making process to return incinerating capacity to the VI in a more economically and environmentally friendly way.

Honourable Wheatley stated that the functionality of the incinerator has been a top priority since his first day in office, as it plays a vital role in the Territory’s waste disposal process.

The minister said, “I recognise the significant challenges the Department of Waste Management faces while the incinerator remains non-operational. Therefore, I eagerly await Pennram's assessment, which will offer valuable insights into the incinerator's condition and enable us to make well-informed decisions for the best way forward.”

Members of the team from the Ministry of Health included Permanent Secretary, Ms. Tasha Bertie and Director of Waste Management. Mr. Marcus Solomon.

The Ministry of Health and Social Development is committed to improving the health of the people of the Virgin Islands.
