Wednesday, 11 July 2018 - 4:11pm

The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) observed World Telecommunications and Information Society Day with a focus on hurricane preparedness.

Chief Executive Officer of the TRC, Mr. Guy L. Malone deemed it a success and said, “This year we wanted people to not only remember world telecoms day but most importantly help people be prepared in some small way for the hurricane season.”

The TRC focused on community outreach in the four main islands to assist persons with preparations for the hurricane season. Over 650 items including chargers, charging kits, lights, radios and vehicle emergency kits were distributed in Jost Van Dyke, Virgin Gorda, Tortola and Anegada.

Residents were also able to give their concerns to the commission and speak with TRC officers in regards to telecommunication services.

World Telecoms Day was observed under the theme, ‘Trying to Reason with Hurricane Season; The Importance of Staying Connected During and After a Disaster’,

To view items, videos and pictures from the distribution day, visit the TRC’s Facebook page @TRCVI.

The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission thanks the community for their support as they continue to do their part for the 2018 hurricane season.

Notes:

  • The day is observed annually worldwide since 1969 and helps to bring awareness to the possibilities of what the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT) can bring to societies and economies, as well as find ways to bridge the digital divide. The British Virgin Islands joined the rest of world in 2009 in observing World Telecommunication and Information Society Day.
