The Office of the City Manager will soon open the doors of the Old Her Majesty’s Prison Museum. Final preparations are progressing and the decision has been made to have prisoners from Her Majesty’s Prison contribute several crafts and merchandise to the museum.
The restoration of the prison on Main Street began in December 2014 and will serve as a museum upon its completion. The prison was constructed in 1774 and still holds its rustic feel with a few additional historic artifacts.
Upon completion, an opening ceremony will be held and the Ministry of Communications and Works will hand over the keys to the Ministry of Education and Culture, the Ministry responsible for museums.
The development of the museum is a part of the Ministry of Communications and Works’ initiative to enhance the city of Road Town and the tourism product.
