The Department of Waste Management is set to relaunch its house to house garbage collection programme for a period of four months from 3rd June until 30th September. Director, Mr. Marcus Solomon said the pilot programme will service persons in portions of Tortola, Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke. Mr. Solomon said, “The information that we will be collecting through this pilot programme will help to inform garbage collection strategies for the next three to four years.” He added, “We want to see if we can reduce the need for public bins, which can be seen as unsightly and a public health concern.”

Mr. Solomon said pilot communities are asked to participate by putting their garbage preferably in a trash bin and placing it outside for collection on the scheduled day and times.

“We have also labelled every community dumpster on Tortola and the dumpsters in the pilot area will be removed because we want full participation,” Mr. Solomon explained.

In terms of expansion of the programme, the Director said that its longevity will depend solely on the output from this pilot programme.  “We tried it during COVID 19 and we had some positive feedback, we want to see if this type of collection programme can be sustainable.

We are asking the pilot communities for their full participation as we continue to progress towards a cleaner greener BVI,” Mr. Solomon stated.
