Secretary General of the BVI National Commission for the United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO), Dr. Allison Flax- Archer, is encouraging persons to continue yearning for knowledge and joy; and reading she said is simply one avenue of doing this.

“Reading is not for a select few, it is for everyone and should be a way of life,” Dr. Flax- Archer said.

As part of activities for Reading is Fun Week, she read books including ‘Road at the Zook’ by Discovery Kids, ‘Never Say A Mean Word Again’ by Jacqueline Jules and ‘Ti Koko and Kush Kush’ by local author, Dr. Patricia Turnbull to the students of the Althea Scatliffe Primary School and the Eslyn Henley Richiez Learning Centre who were overjoyed to hear about the adventures of the books’ characters.

“I really enjoyed reading with students at schools this week. The warmth felt and instant gratification experienced was all I needed,” she added.

Dr. Flax- Archer said reading is also about understanding and trying to interpret what one has read about.

“Through stories, children are exposed to a wide range of words which can help build their vocabulary and improve understanding. This is the same for adults,” she explained.

Reading is Fun Week was held under the theme, “Read-Unlock Your Imagination and Expand Your Horizon”.
