Press Release
The Ministry of Health and Social Development is reporting 25 confirmed cases of Zika as of September 27.
Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Ronald Georges in a statement said, “As of today September 27 we are confirming 25 cases of Zika in the Territory. These cases have been confirmed by PCR testing at Quest Diagnostics in Puerto Rico and Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) in Trinidad.”
In speaking about prevention of the disease, Dr. Georges said, “Prevention of Zika is very similar to prevention of Chikungunya and Dengue Virus transmission. The main focus is the consistent destruction and removal of potential breeding sites for mosquitos. This is a multi-pronged approach consisting of consistent work by the Vector Control Team, community mobilisation and behavior change.”
The Vector Control Unit of the Environmental Health Division continues to carry out regular inspections in areas that are known to be high-risk areas for mosquito transmissions and responds to the premises of reported cases within 24 to 48 hours.
He added, “It is important that persons who suspect that they are susceptible to the virus, to contact the Environmental Health Division at 468-5110 immediately to put measures in place to reduce the risk of transmission.”
Residents are reminded to conduct weekly surveillance activities for breeding sites. Throw away unwanted containers that can hold water, dispose of garbage on a regular basis and open drains where water could settle. Persons are also encouraged to properly scrub the sides of containers to destroy mosquito eggs, keep the yard clean and clear of weeds and keep containers not being used faced down.
The National Health Insurance is currently now paying for the ELIZA test for eligible beneficiaries and PCR is available free via CARPHA in Trinidad.
The Ministry of Health and Social Development will continue to monitor the situation and work closely with key agencies, civic organisations and the community to mitigate the impact of Zika and continue to keep the community updated on interventions that are planned.
