The just concluded 51^st BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival, prominently depicted elements of Virgin Islands culture and cultural arts.

Premier of the Virgin Islands Honourable Dr. Natalio Wheatley, officially opened the Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival which was infused with local culture through music, visual art, cuisine, literature, dance and other elements of the unique Virgin Islands festival.

Director of Culture, Dr. Katherine Smith said that there is a strong maritime culture in the Virgin Islands and that she is gratified and encouraged to see the interest in the activities including a maritime exhibition.

The maritime exhibition that was featured daily, resulted from a collaborative effort between the BVI Spring Regatta, the Department of Culture, and Creative Waves. The exhibition focused on both traditional and modern aspects of maritime culture, highlighting their enduring significance to the Virgin Islands.

Dr. Katherine Smith said, “From the traditional Tortola sloop activities to our modern-day activities such as our professions in the yachting industry, as captains, as fishers, our speedboat beach recreational activities and of course many come from far and wide to sail the sailing capital of the world. This was depicted beautifully. It was a pleasure to work with the BVI Spring Regatta, Creative Waves, and of course the BVI Tourist Board.”

Director of the BVI Spring Regatta Ms. Caylee Smith said the committee is thrilled with its first attempt to have more art and culture at the BVI Spring Regatta.

“We are so pleased to have partnered with the Department of Culture and Creative Waves to have Virgin Islands maritime heritage represented at the biggest sailing event in the Territory,” Ms. Smith said.

She added, “We are thrilled that residents and visitors loved having art at the regatta village. The community came together to deliver a stunning exhibition, dance and music and we look forward to seeing what our community wants to share next year.
