A delegation including officials from Government and the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) will be attending the CANTO 33rd Annual Conference and Trade Exhibition in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

Chief Executive Officer of the TRC, Mr. Guy Lester Malone said the exhibition will be held from July 16 to 19 and that it is important for the Territory to participate in such events as it is an opportunity to meet with industry leaders.

“Many important people in the industry attend the CANTO conference,” Mr. Malone said, adding, “For example CEOs and Managers of Cable and Wireless, Digicel and other service providers are at the forums. It is a great networking opportunity.”

He also added that the conference attracts telecommunication ministers and executives in the region.

“Telecommunication ministers from across the region present at a ministerial roundtable forum their status and highlight future plans on the direction their Government foresees for the evolution of telecommunication. This is why it is important for us to attend, to gauge where we are positioned to better improve our technologies in the BVI,” the TRC’s CEO stated.

The week will be held under the theme “Reimagining Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) as a Tool for National Growth & Development”. Topics to be discussed include smart communities: reimagining the partnership between government and businesses; new strategies in the selling and distribution of spectrum; cyber security and opportunities in the cloud.

Mr. Malone said that the commission expects to garner new ideas for policy, regulations and technology from the forums that can be applied in the Territory to enhance the services provided.

CANTO, formerly known as the Caribbean Association of National Telecommunication Organisation, is an entity for the telecommunication industry which aims to influence the innovation and development of ICT solutions for the benefit of members by developing, navigating and leveraging relationships with all stakeholders.
