The Ministry of Health and Social Development is encouraging the community to organise walks and physical activity events in celebration of Physical Activity Day, Monday, April 6.

Activities to mark the day will be done under the theme ‘Sedentary is Disease, Physical Activity is Health’.

Coordinator for Health Promotions Services, Ms. Ivy George said that in order for physical activity to be sustainable, persons must be active in their own way.

Ms. George said, “The theme of Physical Activity day is in line with the Ministry’s strategic plan to improve the overall health and well-being of the population and to reduce the occurrences of chronic non-communicable diseases.”

Ms. George advocated for a paradigm shift from health complacency to health consciousness adding that the aim is to see the community incorporating physical activity as part of their everyday lives.

The Health Promotions Coordinator stated that the Ministry of Health and Social Development is asking the community to be committed to exercising at least 30 minutes a day every day. She said the more people move, the greater the health benefits and the better they will feel.

The community is therefore urged to engage in activities that encourage movement in celebration of the upcoming Physical Activity day, as the Ministry of Health and Social Development continue to advocate for a healthier Virgin Islands.
