ROLE SUMMARY
The successful applicant will respond to emergency situations and inspect equipment, structures and businesses to ensure the health and safety of others in the Territory.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Respond to emergencies to extinguish and control fires and as well as non-fire rescue work such as salvage and overhaul work to ensure the health and safety of others.
2. Perform preventative maintenance and inspections of fire apparatus and equipment, other emergency equipment as well as checking hydrants for accessibility and water pressure to ensure that they are in full working order when required.
3. Attend meetings, training sessions and workshops to ensure awareness of changes to policies or procedures which may be relevant to the role.
4. Maintain and clean the fire station and grounds when required to ensure a clean and safe working environment.
5. Perform inspections of structures and businesses throughout the community in order for preventive measures to be taken if needed to prevent the likelihood of fires and other emergencies.
6. Obtain and maintain Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) International Qualifications through the requisite training and examinations; respond to Medical Emergencies at the request of the Fire Service.
7. Perform any other related duties as required by Supervisor or any other senior officer in order to contribute to the effectiveness and efficiency of the department.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or equivalency
  • One (1) to two (2) years working experience
  • Valid BVI Driver’s License
  • Good knowledge of Government structure, policies and procedures
  • Good knowledge of relevant laws, regulations and policies
  • Basic knowledge of the use of standard office equipment and computer applications
  • Sound knowledge of the geography of the community, including the location of hydrants and buildings
  • Knowledge of fire equipment and appliances, mathematical calculations and operational fire fighter and incident skills
  • Ability to apply Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) skills
  • Ability to pass all Fire Service Applicants Tests and In-house Physical Fitness Tests
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Good interpersonal and organisational skills
  • Ability to work well under pressure
