To provide economic assistance and social support to the vulnerable within the community to aid them in overcoming situations that adversely affect their quality of life.


Step 1:  Applicants must complete the department's Public Assistance application and Service Delivery forms. In addition, applicants must provide the interviewing officer with:

  • Valid Proof of Income (Pay slips or a Job Letter)
  • Proof of Expenses (Utility Bills, Receipts, etc.)
  • Proof of Citizenship and Immigration Status 
  • Medical Reports/Bills (where applicable)
  • Photo Identification

Step 2: The completed case file is forwarded to the Case Manager of the Family Child Protective Services section for an assessment to be performed.

Step 3: The case file is assigned to a Social/Case worker within 1-2 working days.  The Social Worker will contact the applicant/client to schedule an appointment within 24 hours of case assignment.

Step 4:  The Social Worker carries out a thorough investigation of the applicant.

Step 5:  A social investigative report is compiled and attached to the application.  With regards to emergency applications or medical applications received from Peebles Hospital, the Clerk is instructed on decisions that are made by the Chief Social Development Officer or the Committee is canvassed to decide on the application.

Step 6:  The completed application along with the supporting dcouments is then presented to the Committe for consideration.

Step 7:  The Clerk advises the applicant of the Committee's decision, informally (verbally) and followed up in writing.

Additional Notes

Emergency situations will be dealt with within a 24 hour time frame.
