Education Officer in the Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth Affairs, Fisheries and Agriculture, Mrs. Janice George-Harris said this year's goal for Reading Is Fun Week is to foster a love for the process by engaging the Territory in several activities.
Mrs. Harris said, “Reading helps unlock your imagination and helps develop creativity that is so crucial in unlocking new opportunities and the theme pushes us in that direction.”
The week begins with an opening ceremony at the Central Administration Complex (CAC) on Sunday, October 6, at 3:00 p.m. This event is a partnership with Rotary clubs who have also been promoting reading in the Territory.
Posters of books will be affixed around Road Town to showcase favorite books of community members on Monday, October 7. “Persons who wish to submit posters should do so at Ministry for my attention. It should be placed on an 11x17 laminated paper and have picture of the book, a short blurb about why it is your favorite book and your name,” Mrs. Harris said.
The Education Officer also stated that during the week, persons can also expect to see and hear students and other community members reading the news on different media platforms including programmes for the Department of Information and Public Relations.
Other activities for the week include:
- Wednesday, October 9, #IslandReading - Readings by volunteers, Virgin Island authors and poets at various venues around the Territory.
- Friday, October 11, Book Parade and Book Fair - highlights books, story characters and local authors in a march through Road Town, Festival Grounds to CAC, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
- Saturday, VI Scavenger Hunt – Reading Edition – Fee $5, Age: 10 years and older (Registration at book fair on Friday)
Schools across the Territory will also hold special events surrounding the week’s theme.
Reading Is Fun Week is being held under the theme, ‘Read - Unlock Your Imagination and Expand Your Horizon’ and will be held from October 6 to 12.
Reading is Fun Week has been observed in the Territory for the past 27 years. The week was first held in October 1992, under the theme, ‘Share the Joy in Reading’.
