House to house and roadside waste collection continues as new collection days are now on Mondays and Thursdays.
The programme was initiated as part of the 7R’s Waste Management Strategy that began on April 3 to accommodate residents during the 24-Hour curfew. The 7R’s are to Reform; Restrict; Reduce; Recycle; Reuse; Return and Rethink.
Department of Waste Management’s Manage Mr. Neville Allen stated that the overall response has been positive from residents.
Mr. Allen explained that over time, with the continuation of the programme, the big communal bins will be removed as they are not as full as normal and will eventually be replaced by more recycling bins to encourage residents to do more recycling.
Minister for Health and Social Development Honourable Carvin Malone has spoken on several occasions about the 7R’s Waste Management Strategy and has stated that during the curfew was the ideal opportunity for its implementation and with time, more stakeholders will be invited to contribute towards its improvement.
Residents are reminded that household waste must be put outside between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. on Mondays and Thursday as collection begins at 7:00 a.m. Household waste must be contained in sealed bags; and bins or cans are also encouraged to minimise the tampering by stray animals. No special recycling collection is currently available, but persons are encouraged to utilise the bins throughout the communities. To make reports on waste collection, persons can contact 468-9030 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
